At home, we feel safe, comfortable, and at ease. We instinctively know how to be and what to do. The space supports us in being ourselves and going about our business. Public spaces should be equally intuitive. They should tell us what to do and how to behave — where to ride, walk and sit — while always keeping us safe. Much of public life, like sharing news and trading, happened in streets and squares. Roads were designed for walking, and signs were readable at 5km/h. But then, cars came along, driving fast at 50, 60, 90+ km/h. This forced a very different street design because the human eye perceives things differently when driving (consider the size of motorway signs, for example). Also, a different level of noise and sense of insecurity followed.

Singapore as of late is continually building its reputation as a City in Nature, with Singaporean design long having a strong consciousness to acknowledge that green spaces matter. Urban planners and architects alike have taken a conscientious decision to weave in nature throughout the city as it continues to uproot new buildings and developments, incorporating the implementation of plant life in any form, whether it be through green roofs, cascading vertical gardens, or verdant walls.This article will explore the pioneering actions taking place in Singapore to create a more biodiverse city and nation, and how this provides a view of how other major cities can adopt similar initiatives over the next decade to provide a blueprint for the future.

In the big city, you typically share walls, ceilings, and floors with neighbors, and many times, can hear every conversation that goes on between them. And in the suburbs? Cedar Springs Tiny Village comes fully equipped with amenities that include a community garden, walking paths, WiFi, and cable connections. It’s also just a short walk to Natural Spring Resort, which offers a pool, beach, fishing, and even scuba diving (yes, the lake water is that clear). Sites are available for short stays or for leases of 13 months and longer.
